It was said that the Emperor of Heaven chose the twelve zodiac animals by
judging the number of contributions they had given to humans. The horse
was among those chosen of course. One day, the rooster saw how popular the horse
was among the humans and how well they treated him. The rooster was understandably
pretty jealous. Seeing the unhappy rooster, the horse suggested that he try doing a
musical favour for the humans since he has
a good voice.
The rooster took his advice and started to crow everyday at dawn to wake people up.
That was an effective ploy and the human beings started to feel grateful towards him.
However there was another rule blocking him: the Emperor of Heaven only chose
zodiac animals from the wild beasts, and birds were not included.
The rooster caught up with and confronted the Emperor of Heaven and he agreed that
the rooster was also doing good deeds for the humans. So he put a flower on the
head of the rooster and entered him in the competition to be chosen as an animal of
the zodiac.
The big day finally arrived. The rooster got up early so that he could be at the head of
the queue and on the way he met the dog. Of course he wanted to be ahead of the dog,
so he flew and jumped. Finally he arrived there earlier than the dog. The dog had no
choice but to take his place after the rooster and both of them were selected to be
zodiac animals. But they have since become enemies. Now whenever the dog sees the
rooster, he will immediately chase him.
