In ancient times, there was no such thing as the “five cereals”or crops in the human world.
One autumn long ago, a sheep came to the human world from the Palace of Heaven and
found human beings to be suffering from starvation. He understand that they could not
grow-crops. Motivated by his benevolence, the sheep went back to the Palace of Heaven,
stole the seeds of “five cereals” and gave the seeds to the human world.
Human beings planted the seeds, and in appreciation of the sheep’s help, they held a
grand sacrificial ceremony for the sheep.
The sacrificial activities disturbed the Emperor of Heaven, so he ordered that the sheep be
killed in the human world. However, a strange thing happened the following year :in the
place where the sheep was executed, green grass and lambs appeared. The lambs lived
and carried on with their families and further generations in the human world ever since
then.
Although the Emperor of Heaven didn't let go of that whole stealing thing, he couldn’t
oppose everybody’s opinion and had to agree that the sheep became one of the zodiacs.
A common idiom for “sheep”: 亡羊补牢wáng yáng bǔ láo(It is not too late to )fix the sheepfold
after a sheep has been killed .The idiom refers to a never-give-up attitude. Even if something
goes wrong, it’s never too late to take action and fix the situation. You can prevent further loss.
在远古时代，人间是没有五谷的。有一年秋天，一只神羊从天宫来到凡间，发现人类面黄肌瘦，才知道人类不种粮食。神羊善心大发，立即回到天宫，偷偷摘下五谷，把种籽交给了人类。
人类播下五谷种籽，当年就长出了庄稼。为了感谢神羊的送种之恩，人类举行了盛大的祭祀仪式。
祭祀活动惊动了玉帝，玉帝顿时大怒，下令将羊于人间宰杀。第二年，奇怪的事情发生了，在神羊行刑的地方，竟长出了青草和羊羔。羊从此在人间传宗接代。
人类听说玉帝要挑十二种动物为人类生肖时，便一致推举羊作为生肖。尽管玉帝对羊盗谷之事耿耿于怀，但难抵众人意见，只好同意羊当上了生肖。
