变调 Modulations of tones

两个第三声音节连读时，前一个要读成第二声。

When a 3rd tone is immediately followed by another 3rd tone, the former is pronounced as the 2nd tone.

半三声 The half 3rd tone

第三声音节后边跟一个第一声、第二声、第四声或轻声音节时，读作半三声，即，只读第三声的前半下降部分，不读后半的上升部分，马上接读下面的音节。

A 3rd-tone syllable becomes a half 3rd tone when it is immediately followed by a 1st , 2nd ,4th or neutral tone syllables i.e.only the first half (the falling part)of the tone is articulated ,and is immediately followed by the next syllable.

“不”的变调

“不”的本调是第四声，但在另一个第四声音节前边时，变为第二声。

The basic tone for “不” is the 4th tone. It changes to 2nd when it is immediately followed by another 4th tone syllable: bù hē bù nán bù hǎo bú qù bù gāo bù lái bù xiǎo bú xiè

隔音符号 Dividing-mark

ɑ、o、e开头的音节连接在其他音节后面的时候，如果音节的界限发生混淆，用隔音符号(’)隔开。

When a syllable beginning with or follows another syllable, it is desirable to use a dividing-mark(’)to clarify the boundary the two syllables ,e.g. Tiān’ānmén

音节和汉字 Syllables and Chinese characters

汉字是汉语的书写符号。每个音节可以写成一个或若干个汉字。

The characters are the written symbols of the Chinese language .Every syllable can be written into one or several characters.
