Rabbit

It is said that once long ago the Rabbit and the Ox were neighbors. One day, the
Rabbit was showing off to the Ox:”I am the Champion of long-distance racing in
the animal world!” The Ox then asked the Rabbit for advice. The Rabbit for advice.
The Rabbit said: “long-distance racing depends on an efficient body structure,
but you have a big body-you will never run as fast as I can!”
The Ox wasn’t convinced. So he began to practice long-distance running everyday.
After years of training, he developed a pair of “iron feet“so that he could run as
fast as the wind.
On the day that the Emperor of Heaven was selecting the twelve zodiac animals,
there was a rule that those who arrived at the finish line first would become one
of the twelve animals. The Rabbit and the Ox made an appointment that they
would get up early as the first crow of the rooster. Then they would run straight
to the Heavenly Palace to fight for the title. The next day when the rooster crowed,
the Rabbit started to run. After a while, the Rabbit looked back and didn’t see
any animals, so he fell asleep on the grass. Although the Ox did fall behind at
first, he was the first one to arrive at the Heavenly Palace through his tough
endurance while the Rabbit was still sleeping soundly on the grass.
Later the Rabbit was woken up by sounds of hurried footsteps. It was the Tiger
passing by. The Rabbit tried to catch up, but the Tiger left him behind. As a result,
the Rabbit ranked fourth among the twelve zodiac animals.
Although the Rabbit became one of the twelve animals，he was ashamed that
he had lost the race to the Ox.
When he came back home .he moved his house to an earthy hole in the ground
to hide himself. which is why Rabbit live there nowadays.
相传兔和黄牛是邻居，有一天，兔子跟黄牛炫耀道：“我是动物界中的长跑冠军！”于是黄牛虚心向兔子请教，兔子却说“长跑得靠先天的素质，你这粗壮的身子，是永远跑不快的。”
黄牛心里不服气，便开始苦练长跑，终于练成了一双“铁脚”。四蹄如风，几天几夜也不知疲乏。
到了玉帝排生肖的日子，依照规则，谁先到就让谁当生肖。黄牛与兔子约定，鸡叫头遍就起来，直奔天宫争生肖。第二天鸡叫头遍时，兔子早跑了。兔子跑了好一阵子，回头一看，不见任何动物的影子，于是便在草地上呼呼大睡起来。黄牛虽然落后了，但凭着坚韧的耐力，趁着兔子还在酣睡时，先跑到了天宫。
一阵急促的脚步声惊醒了兔子，原来是老虎跑了过去，兔子赶紧追赶，还是落在了老虎之后，结果兔子只拍到了生肖的第四位。
兔子虽然当上了生肖，但因输给了老牛，觉得脸上无光，回来以后，便把家搬到了土洞中，所以现在的野兔也还是住在土洞中。

守株待兔shǒu zhū dài tù
MEANING: Someone who wants succeed without hard work.
比喻希望不经过努力而得到成功的心理。
