Called “Lu” for short, Shandong Province is located in eastern China on the lower reaches
of the Yellow River. Jinan is its capital.

rainfall and four distinct seasons. The weather is changeable in spring, scorching hot and
rainy in summer, mild in autumn and cold and dry in winter. The annual average temperature
is between 11 and 14 degrees Centigrade, gradually declining from south to north and
from west to east.

The Chinese people often use “one mountain, one river and one sage” to describe the
status of the Qi-Lu culture in the Chinese traditional culture. The “one mountain” refers
to the Taishan Mountain, celebrated not only for its magnificent natural sights, but also
because it is one of the birthplaces of the ancient culture of the Yellow River valley and
the cultural root of the Chinese nation. The “one river” refers to the Yellow River, which
empties into the sea here. The “one sage” refers to the Confucius. The core of the Qi-Lu
culture is the Confucianist culture. Confucius and Mencius, representatives of the
Confucian culture, were from Shandong.
Lu cuisine leads the four most famous Chinese cuisines. It is nowadays regarded as
representative of northern cuisine with the widest coverage in China. It lays much
emphasis on the outer appearance and color of courses, pure but not greasy, lightly
fragrant, fresh, crisp and tender. The coastal Jiaodong Cuisine (mainly comprised of
seafood), the inland Jinan Cuisine and the self-systematic Confucian cuisine are key
components. Comparatively famous dishes include Fried Pork Tripe with Chicken
Gizzard, Stir-fried Diced Chicken, Sweet and Sour Yellow River Carp, Prawns Stewed
in Brown Sauce and Braised Intestines in Brown Sauce. Dezhou Braised Chicken,
Battercake and Zhoucun Sesame Cake are special local products of Shandong.
Shandong abounds in tourist resources. Daming Lake and Baotu Spring in Jinan, Taishan
