The Yangtze River, the Yellow River(长江,黄河)
The Yangtze River originates from the main peak of the Tanggula Mountains on the
Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and passes through 11 provinces, cities and autonomous
regions of Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Chongqing, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui,
Jiangsu and Shanghai, before finally flowing into the East China Sea. With a
length of more than 6,300km, it is the longest river in China an the third longest in
the world.
The upper reaches of the Yangtze feature a big vertical drop, with torrents and many
gorges flanked by towering mountains, such as the Tiger-Jumping Gorge, Three
Gorges, and so on.Located in Lijiang Naxi Autonomous Country of Yunnan
Province, the Tiger-Jumping Gorge is about 16 km long. The mountains on both
banks of the gorge rise over 3,000m above the river an the drop of the roaring river
reaches 200m. At its narrowest point ,the gorge is only 30m wide. It is said that
there was once a huge tiger that jumped over it, hence the name “Tiger-Jumping
Gorge”.After the Three Gorges, one reaches the plain area in the middle reaches
of the river. Here the river broadens and the flow slows down. This part is
ancharacterized with many crooked streams, branches and lakes.
Known as the famous land of fish and rice, the lower reaches of the Yangtze River
are low and flat, as well as broad and deep. At the spot where the Yangtze enters
the sea, the river is 80-90km wide, where the water and sky blend into
one splendid color.
Reputed to be ‘Golden Watercourse’, the Yangtze River has not only a high value
for shipping, but also beautiful natural scenery and many scenic spots and
historical sites.
The drainage area of the Yangtze River is rich in products and the economy is
well developed. Many metropolises like Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan and
Chongqing are distributed here.
The Yellow River originates from the foot of the Yagradagze Mountain of the
Bayakala Range in Qinghai Province, passing through nine provinces and
autonomous regions of Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia,
Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan and Shandong, and flowing into the Bohai Sea.
Altogether it is over 5,400km long and is the second longest river in China.
Seen from the map, the Yellow River lies in a shape of “几’’.
There are many gorges on its upper reaches, such as the Dragon and
Sheep Gorge, the Family Liu Gorge and the
Bronze Gorge, such areas have an abundance of water resources and
large-scale hydroelectric power stations have been built. The middle reaches
of the Yellow River flow through the Loess Plateau, where there is a serious
problem of soil erosion. This part of the river contains large amount of sand,
forming a powerful “mud river .”
The drainage area of the lower reaches of the Yellow River covers the North
China Plain, where the river broadens, the flow slows down and the mud and
sand deposits form a “hanging river”. where the riverbed is actually higher than
the surrounding land beyond the built-up banks.
The Hukou Fall are located at the juncture of Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces,
where there is a 30-50m-wide deep gully scoured by the Yellow River.
The turbulent river from north rushes down into the gully, forming a 15-20m-high
fall rumbling like thunder, The fall rushes down like boiling water pouring down
from a huge kettle, hence its name.
